About the Author

David Spence, MD
Trained in Neurology with Dr. Barnett before going on to complete training in Internal Medicine, and then a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at San Francisco. Has focused on stroke prevention throughout his career. Professor of Neurology and Clinical Pharmacology at the Robarts Research Institute, London, Canada. Ran a hypertension clinic for 20 years; for the past 15 years has run a busy stroke prevention clinic. Pioneered ultrasound measurement of carotid plaque for patient management, genetic research and evaluation of new therapies. Published in 2006 a book for the public; How to prevent your stroke. Wife and first son are family physicians; has done a lot of continuing medical education to family physicians around the world. Selected by the World Congress of Neurology in 2009 to teach the course on stroke prevention.

Henry JM Barnett, MD
A giant in stroke prevention: first to show that Aspirin reduced the risk of stroke; led the study that showed that carotid endarterectomy reduced the risk of stroke in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis, and the study that showed that extra-cranial to intracranial bypass was not effective. Founding chair of the department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, in which Neurology and Neurosurgery joined to form a department separate from Medicine and Surgery. This model, which he pioneered with his neurosurgical colleague Charlie Drake, has been copied successfully the world over. Former editor of the journal Stroke, and internationally recognized as the father of stroke prevention.

Basic Principles and Operative Management of the Rotator Cuff by Drs. C. Benjamin Ma and Brian Feeley is a unique and comprehensive book that covers arthroscopic, open techniques, and reconstructive options for treating rotator cuff tears

The first section focuses on an up-to-date understanding the basic principles of the rotator cuff—its anatomy, the basic science behind rotator cuff pathology, diagnosis, and imaging. This section references recent literature so that the reader understands the pathology of rotator cuff disease. The second section focuses on the different types of rotator cuff pathology, how to diagnose pathology accurately, and discusses different non operative and operative treatment options.

It is a comprehensive text on the operative management of rotator cuff pathology, including arthroscopic and open repairs, revision surgery, tendon transfers, and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The book also describes “tricks and tips” to help the surgeon avoid common errors that are often encountered during the procedure. Different options for each type of rotator cuff problem will be presented. The final section will focus on complicated problems encountered in the shoulder.

Topics Include:

Anatomic structures, vascular and nerve supply, and the relevant surgical anatomy of the rotator cuff

Biomechanics of the rotator cuff—how the rotator cuff works to raise and lower the shoulder and position the arm in space, and how these functions are lost in cuff tears

Understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for tendon and muscle degeneration

How to evaluate imaging in order to accurately diagnose rotator cuff tear problems and to be well-prepared for the operating room

Office and surgical management of common rotator cuff problems—divided into an introduction, diagnosis, non operative management, operative management, post operative management, and outcomes

Treatment options for large and massive cuff tears

Reconstructive options—replacements and muscle transfers

Today’s prehospital care provider will be confronted with a wide variety of medical and traumatic emergencies, will need to possess a strong foundation of medical knowledge, and will be using a large armamentarium of interventions and treatments. It is with this in mind that we have prepared this book.

Prehospital Care—Pearls and Pitfalls, is a unique, stimulating, and easy-to-read way, provide practical information applicable to the prehospital setting and help the prehospital emergency care provider be prepared to manage the myriad of emergency and non-emergency situations that he or she will be called upon to assist.

The past four decades have seen a remarkable evolution in the delivery of prehospital care. Where once the only therapy available for an out-of-hospital emergency medical situation was a ride to the hospital at a speed limited only by the vehicle you were in and the driving conditions at the time, now much of the interventional capability of the emergency department has been moved into an ambulance staffed with highly trained individuals who can bring to the patient the sophisticated medical care needed at the point of first contact with the health care delivery system.

A complete, up-to-date text on the practical application of biopharmaceuticals and pharmacokinetics

Applied Biopharmaceutics & Pharmacokinetics is written to provide you with a basic understanding of the principles of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics as applied to drug product development and drug therapy. The revised and updated sixth edition remains unique in teaching basic concepts that may be applied to understanding complex issues associated with in vivo drug delivery that are essential for safe and effective drug therapy.

The text integrates basic scientific principles with drug product development and clinical pharmacy practice. Practical examples and questions are included to encourage you to apply the principles in patient care and drug consultation situations. Chapter Objectives, Chapter Summaries, and Frequently Asked Questions appear within each chapter to help you identify and focus on key concepts. In order to keep the material as up to date and relevant as possible, most of the chapters have been revised to reflect our current understanding of drug disposition, pharmacodynamics, and drug therapy.

Are you looking for concise, practical answers to those questions that are often left unanswered by traditional references on uveitis? Are you seeking brief, evidence-based advice for the daily examination of patients? Curbside Consultation in Uveitis: 49 Clinical Questions provides quick and direct answers to the thorny questions most commonly posed during a “curbside consultation” between experienced clinicians.

Dr. Stephen Foster has designed this unique reference in which uveitis specialists offer expert advice, preferences, and opinions on tough clinical questions commonly encountered by ophthalmologists, residents, and other health care professionals. The unique Q&A format provides quick access to current information related to uveitis with the simplicity of a conversation between two colleagues. Images, diagrams, and references are included to enhance the text and to illustrate clinical diagnoses and treatment plans.
